1838, 29 January: He was granted a Ticket of Leave. 1840, 27 May: His Conditional Pardon No.2480 was approved. 1845, 29 July: He was issued with a Free Pardon, but a notation on his VDL Conduct Record says although pardoned, he was "not to return to Europe" (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-2$init=CON31-1-2p66).


1837, December: John Atkinson petitioned for clemency. Below is a summary record from the National Archives, Kew: HO 17/33/112 ... Prisoner name: John Atkinson. Court and date of trial: Bedford Summer Assizes, 4 July 1831. Crime: Burglary in premises of Mr Bull, jeweller of Bedford, together with James Deering (or James Dearing). Initial sentence: [Death respited to] Transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Character of the worst description. London thief. Annotated (Outcome): Ticket of leave in the Colony may be granted by Governor if he thinks fit. Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by John Gregory, Colonial Treasurer, and Joseph Morgan, Chief Constable, both of Van Diemen's Land, testifying to his good conduct. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Innocent as crime committed by James Deering; good conduct. Other papers: Copy of conduct reports of prisoner and James Deering in Van Diemen's Land. Copy of statements of prisoner, and three statements of James Deering. Copy of covering letters from prisoner and Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land, with forwarding letter from Downing Street. Memorandum of case and decision. Additional Information: Transported, together with James Deering, in 1832 on board Elizabeth to Van Diemen's Land. Worked as police constable in Van Diemen's Land. 1832: On arrival in VDL, John Atkinson was listed as 21, a shoemaker and single. 1835, January: By this time he was working as a Police Constable but was accused of "gross misconduct for being at a public house when he should have been on duty". It was recommended that he be "dismissed from the Police and placed in the Sorell Road Party for 3 months and at the expiration of which to be disposed of according to his conduct during sentence" (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-2$init=CON31-1-2p66).
