HO 17/9/8 1823 Dec 1 individual petition (the prisoner) and 1 collective petition (25 people, including the prosecutor from Stockwell, Clapham and Lambeth in Surrey) on behalf of James Atterton, gardener, from Stockwell, Surrey, convicted at the 'last' adjourned sessions held in Newington in Surrey, for stealing a potato fork from a field, value 2/6, property of Samuel Wicks. Grounds for clemency: first offence which he deplores, has a wife and 8 children which he has done his utmost to maintain, lived in Stockwell for 8 years and his was the 50th commitment on 18 November 1823 but was unexpectedly the first prisoner tried on the following sessions so that he was unprepared with witnesses to speak for his character. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation, held in the Horsemonger Lane County Gaol at Newington. Annotated: 'Gaoler reports bad character. Refused. 9 Dec 1823'. AK 8.
