Convict Notes

Bristol Assizes. ... About seven o’clock on Monday evening all the prisoners were brought for sentence; ... His Lordship addressed the prisoners respectively in very impressive manner; observing that they had forfeited their lives to their country, and it would his duty to  have Death recorded against them : addressing Autton by name, his Lordship said that Court had deliberated long and seriously whether it would not order the utmost sentence of the law to carried into effect upon him, had  been found guilty of that most atrocious crime, robbing the individual who had given him employment and bread; of profiting by the knowledge of his master's house only for ... of plundering it: his companion in guilt, no doubt, was aware also of the circumstance. However the Royal mercy  might be extended to them, for their lives were concerned, yet they might rest assured that they would be banished from their country for ever. Bristol Mirror, 8 April 1826.
