Description on indent: Age 15, Native of London, Height 4/11, Eyes Hazel, Hair flaxen, complexion florid. Conduct record: April 16, 1822, Neglect of Duty and Disobeyance of Orders, 50 lashes, 25 lashes of this punishment from the commandant. November 8, 1823, Absent from muster of bedding, 25 lashes. February 21, 1824, Absenting himself without leave, 25 lashes. May 1st, 1829, Drunk and Disorderly, fined 5/- May 15, 1829, Committed to trial for sheep stealing. in the late 1820s, Axford was a member of William Sheldon's gang of sheep thieves, who were famously hunted by Jorgen Jorgenson. Axford and fellow gang member Norah Corbett were captured by police in late 1828, with the Hobart Town Courier noting on 6 December of the year that they were both in Oatlands Gaol under investigation of diverse felonies. He eventually faced trial along with Sheldon and others, pleading guilty to the crimes as charged and receiving a further 7 years' to his sentence.
