James stole a pianoforte, the property of a Mr H Jones. A kitchen gardener, he could graft bud and prune. His conduct in the colony was exemplary as there is not one conviction on his record sheet, which points to the fact that at no time was he ever in gaol in Van Diemen's land. Upon arrival he was assigned to a Mrs Abbott in the farming district of Ross. He received his ticket of leave on 18th October 1839 and received his Free Certificate No. 748 in 1841.
