John was born in 1799 in Highworth, Wiltshire - baptised 15/8/1799. He was the eldest son of the local blacksmith. His common law wife was Harriet Morse who was almost 20 years his senior. They never married although they had 3 children, Maria born 1820, John born 1822 and George born 1824.(source Wiltshire baptism records) In January 1824 John was convicted of poaching at Devizes Quarter sessions and sentenced to 3 months in prison. John was 36 years old on arrival. He was the father of John Ayliffe (Mount Stuart Elphinstone 1848 to VDL). John was married to Harriet and had 3 children (one of them being the above mentioned. John was 5'6 1/2" tall, dark brown hair and whiskers, hazel eyes, right forefinger crippled, slight scar on right cheek, face freckled, stout. 18/2/1844: TOL 31/10/1846: CP 20/2/1847: Married Elizabeth Riley, (Rajah 1841). She was 23 and he was 46. 11/10/1849: John Jnr. was punished for gross misconduct in eloping with his father’s wife. John Jnr later married Mary Ann Everitt (Sir Robert Sippings 1852). John Jnr was described as a widower on the marriage certificate, however a marriage with Elizabeth Riley has not been found. 19/10/1872: John Senior, not being of sound mind, memory and understanding, but lunatic and distracted, killed himself with a razor.
