I was puzzled for a long while as to why John went back to crime knowing that a second offence probably meant transportation as happened to his father John snr. One day I chanced upon an Australian document concerning John which included the three letters ‘wid.’ I had no idea that he had been married in England but soon found records of his marriage to Jane Ponting. Sadly, three months later she died in childbirth and baby William only lived for two weeks. John had lost all of his hopes of a settled family life and one can imagine him spending time in the local pubs, keeping doubtful company and, maybe, turning to crime to fund his drinking. R Marchant
John was 27 years old on arrival. He was the son of John Ayliffe/Ayliff (Asia 1836 to VDL). John was 5'3" tall, single, could read and write, fair complexion, light brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes, cast in eyes, scar left side of nose, woman inside right arm, ring 2nd finger left hand. John received a TOL which was revoked when on 11/10/1849 John was punished for gross misconduct in eloping with his father’s wife. (John Snr had married Elizabeth Riley 'Rajah 1841'in 1847). 18/9/1854: John married Mary Ann Everitt (Sir Robert Sippings 1852). John Jnr was described as a widower on the marriage certificate, however a marriage with Elizabeth Riley has not been found. Daughter Mary Ann was born in New Norfolk, Tasmania, on 4 October 1855. her father was recorded as a blacksmith. Harriett, was born in 1857. John was the victim of a robbery on 10 November 1869, in Nerrigundah, and was living in Newcastle, NSW, in 1891, and then moved to SA with his daughter sometime after this date. 13/6/1896: John died at Wallaroo, SA, aged 74.
