National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/68/89. Prisoner name, William Ayers (or William Ayres) Prisoner age: 22 years. Court and date of trial: Maidstone Assizes [Kent] December 1829. Crime: Horse stealing at Windlesham, Surrey on 28 August 1829, property of Thomas Mepham. Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Acknowledges having been in the House of Correction. Annotated (Outcome): Nil 3 February 1830. Petitioner(s): Prisoner. Prisoner undersigned by nine others including prosecutor. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has witnesses who can swear prisoner was with them 40 miles from Windlesham at the time of the crime but they missed the trial; his family is very poor. Other papers: Letter from Mr Crawte of Romney Place, Maidstone forwarding petition and affidavits from James Beaney, Mary Hilton, Lender Sherlock and Louisa Beaney. Additional Information: Tried with his brother Alfred Ayers who was acquitted. Date: 1830 Jan 4.
