Convict Notes
Joseph Azzopardi an insignificant-looking, small Maltese man, murdered a Dutch woman in Smyrna, Turkey in 1842. Joseph was sent to England to be tried and was found guilty and sentenced to death. Joseph was 24 years old on arrival at Norfolk Island in 1844. 7/4/1847: Arrived in VDL. Joseph was then described as: A Groom/Kitchen Gardener, 5'3" tall, dark complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, two marks from small dot on left leg, can read and write a little. Married to Concetta, 1 child. Assigned to Thomas Connell at Richmond. 20/3/1854: TOL 14/8/1855: CP In 1857 His wife Concetta was looking for him and had asked the Government for help in locating him. 17/11/1857 Victorian Government Gazette: AZZOPARDI, JOSEPH, supposed to be at Castlemaine, is requested to apply or to forward his address to the Honorable the Chief Secretary, Melbourne. ?? B.7385. 17th November 1857. 2/1/1858: Joseph Azzopardi married 18 year old Rose Nugent in the Catholic Presbytery in Castlemaine. (Rose came from County Westmeath, Ireland.) Joseph was a Miner. 181/1/1859: Mary, daughter of Joseph Azzopardi and Rose (nee Nugent) at Castlemaine. No record of his death found on NZ, SA, VIC, NSW, QLD, or TAS and WA BDM's.
