Penal Establishment, Secretary's Office, 11th Aug 1871. Enquiry has been made respecting Daniel Barber, per Prince Regent 1, who received certificate of freedom in 1836 and who is requested to call at this office, where he will hear of something to his advantage. Tasmania Police Gazette, 18th Aug 1871, p134.

Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation DANIEL BABER was indicted for stealing, on the 24th of May, 2 shawls, value 8s.; 2 shifts, value 4s.; 2 gowns, value 9s.; 1 pair of stays, value 3s.; 2 night gowns, value 4s.; 1 shirt, value 1s., and 1 frock, value 1s. the goods of Frances Wood. HENRY TURNER. I am a watchman. I met the prisoner on the 28th of May, at half-past four o'clock in the morning, with a bundle of women's clothes, in Great Ormond-street, Queen-square - I stopped him and asked how he came by them; he said he brought them from his mother's in Monmouth-street, and was going to take them to Finsbury-square. FRANCES WOOD. My mother is a widow, and lives in Monmouth-street. I left my situation on the 1st of May, and lived with my mother; the prisoner is my brother - he came there on the 28th of May, and my mother made him a convenience to sleep under the same roof; he went away without giving us notice - I missed the articles stated; I am a widow.(Property produced and sworn to.) GUILTY. Aged 35. Transported for Seven Years. Daniel Baber was listed as 26 years old on arrival in VDL, but listed as 35 at his trial. Please note: Conduct record is listed as 'Daniel Barber'. Daniel had 2 previous convictions. Native Place: St. Anns, London. He was 5'3¼" tall, brown hair, dark hazel eyes, long arms, single. 1830 Muster: Public Works 1832 Muster: Assigned to Mr. Betts. 1833 Muster: Public Works 1835 Muster: Public Works. 3/6/1836 Hobart Town Courier: COF (listed as Barber). 12/4/1838 Launceston Advertiser, Tas: Daniel Barber, committed on a charge of wilful and corrupt perjury, was discharged by proclamation. 10/9/1838 The Sydney Herald: ABSCONDED From my Farm called Jeremy, on the River Abercrombie, Daniel Baber, my free hired Servant, who is under a written engagement to serve me for twelve months from a certain day in the month of July last, as a fencer and rough-carpenter, having previously to his absconding drawn a considerable quantity of property in advance. The said Daniel Baber is free by servitude, arrived by the ship Prince Regent, about thirty years old, sallow complexion, five feet three-quarter inch high, deformed in right shoulder, states that he lost his certificate of freedom. Any person giving such information as will enable me to cause said Daniel Baber to be apprehended, will receive a reward of Two Pounds. M??. Murphy. Sydney, September 8, 1838. 27/7/1844 The Guardian, Sydney: Edited: Daniel Baber was arrested for attempted burglary. Lately he had been in custody for stealing a counterpane, but discharged for want of proof; he had been frequently dealt with for drunkenness, and upwards of half-a-dozen warrants had been issued against him for breaches of agreement, as it was his common practice to hire with gentlemen to go into the interior, obtain an advance, and afterwards become invisible, till the parties he had agreed with had left Sydney. The prisoner was dealt the as a rogue and vagabone, and sent three months to Sydney Gaol as the house of correction. No date of death or marriage found.
