Seems his father, Edward Babington was transported to VDL per "Phoenix" in 1824. He was joined in VDL by his wife Mary and 3 or 4 of their children.




Richard was the son of Edward and Mary Babington. 5/10/1821: Married Mary Starmer in Boston, Lincolnshire, England – 2 daughters. Richard was transported for ‘stealing bacon, wheatmeal and 2 sacks, the property of Henry Wood, Miller, of Toynton, St. Peter. 24/12/1834: TOL Maitland 2/6/1837: COF 7/1/1840: Steerage passenger listed on the Indemnity arrived in Port Phillip from Sydney. 1840: Employed as a labourer by Alexander Mollison, Loddon Valley. 1844: Set up a run named Glenyon with John Carpenter who was also employed by Mollison. They held this lease until October 1850. From 1850 to 1853 it was in the name of Babington only. John Carpenter and Richard also built the Glenlyon Inn in 1844. It was not a successful venture as it was too far from the main road to Castlemaine. 24/9/1845: Married Mary Halden nee Craig at St James, Melbourne (Mary Halden was with widow of Robert Halden, they had arrived from Scotland per ‘Alan Kerr’ in November 1841, and had settled at Glenlyon, near Daylesford. Robert Halden died C1844). Mary and Robert had three children. Richard and Mary also had 3 children. 6/4/1853: Richard died when thrown from a horse. There is a hill north of Lyonville which is named after Richard Babington.
