National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/36/125. Date. 1832 July – 1833 Apr. Prisoner name(s): Philip Baddeley. Prisoner age: 11. Court and date of trial: Newcastle under Lyme [Staffordshire], 3 April 1832. Crime: Breaking into a dwelling house and stealing around £50 in money from box in upper chamber, property of John Urwin. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's report: Character etc bad. Connected with a gang of juvenile offenders. Conduct good on board Euryalus. Annotated (Outcome): Removed to the Euryalus boys ship. The best thing for this boy is to send him abroad as soon as he is fit to go. Petitioner(s): Joseph Baddeley, Newcastle under Lyme, feltmaker, the prisoner's father, undersigned by 39 inhabitants of Newcastle under Lyme, including John Urwin, the prosecutor. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The judge recommended that the prisoner be sent to Millbank Penitentiary to learn a trade. Other papers: Letter from Robert Bull, Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, one of committing magistrates, recommending that prisoner be removed from hulks and sent to Penitentiary. Covering letter for petition from William R Miller, Britwell House, Burnham, Buckinghamshire. Two letters from Henry Willoughby, M P for Newcastle under Lyme, 20 Cork Street, in favour of petition, and stating that the boy will be taken by a tradesman and taught a good trade on his release. Additional Information: Prisoner held in Stafford gaol then removed to Euryalus hulk at Chatham. --------------------------------------------------------------------- NSW Convict Index.
