Thomas Bailey (20), Benjamin Bailey (17), and Matilda Ewer (26), were indicted for a burglary in the house of William Goodchild, of Cheveley . Cambridge General Advertiser, 29 July 1840. ... Ewer, were indicted for having broken into the house of William Goodchild, of Cheveley, on the 10th of June last, and stolen a musical snuff-hox, and other articles. The snuff-box was pledged by the female prisoner at Halstead, where the three prisoners all slept in one room, at the Rose and Crown, on the night of the I4th of June. Benj. Bailey was acquitted: the other two were found guilty, and sentenced to be transported for life. Thomas Bailey having been likewise convicted of stealing a quantity of beverteen, &c. from Robert Adams, tailor, of Barwell. Once for trespass one month; once for assault, tried at the Bar and got a fortnight; once disch’d on suspicion setting fire to a Barn discharged.




Thomas Bailey was 21 years old on arrival. He was the brother of Benjamin Bailey who was also on board, however they were tried at different places and for different crimes. Thomas was 5'5 1/2" tall, dark brown hair, blue eyes, single, could read and write, florid complexion, 2 moles inside right arm, 2 blue dots inside left arm, 2 larges moles right side of throat. Father: Joseph, a labourer at native place. Brothers: Benjamin (on board) John and James Sisters: Isabella, Mary Anne. 6/4/1850: TOL 7/8/1852: Recommended for CP.
