JAIL IN ENGLAND: 2 May, 1850: Sent from Wakefield jail and received aboard the Stirling Castle hulk, Portsmouth -- William Bain, inmate #3033, 19, single, a carter, sentenced to 7 years for housebreaking; once charged with theft but not brought to trial. Described as 5'8" tall, dark brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion; semi-literate; native place Glasgow (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for William Bain; Misc.; Register of Prisoners; 1854-1865). 30/31 March, 1852: He was sent from the hulk to Portsmouth prison. --0--


NEWSPAPER REPORT OF TRIAL: 24 April, 1849: From the Glasgow Chronicle, p5: "Edward Douglas and William Bain, two young boys, were then charged with theft by housebreaking and by opening lockfast places. They both pleaded not guilty. It appeared that they had broken into the premises of Lethem, Blyth, & Lethem, manufacturers, Virginia Street, Glasgow, and stolen 140 tinsel bobbins, two plaids, and a coat; and also, from a lockfast place in the warehouse, three £5 notes, seven £1 notes, 12 shillings, and a bank bill, or bill of exchange, for £537; and also, from another lockfast safe, £3 in silver and copper, and also £2 3s. in silver and copper from a lockfast drawer. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and the prisoners were each sentenced to seven years' transportation." (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) --0--
