The 19 April, 1824, editon of the Glasgow Herald newspaper, Page 4, Column 2: - AYR CIRCUIT COURT OF JUSTICIARY "Yesterday,ROBERT BAIRD, was placed at the bar, accused of theft, by taking from a carrier's cart, on the road from Paisley to Kilmarnock, a black leather pocket-book, containing a quantity of banknotes. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. The Jury being sworn, the Depute-Advocate, Mr Alison, proceeded to call evidence for the Crown. It appeared from the evidence that the prisoner accompanied the carts from Glasgow as a passenger, and during the temporary absence of the carrier's servant, who had charge of the carts, he contrived to steal the pocket-book, which contained from £130 to £140 in money, and was deposited among the parcels in the cart. He was afterwards apprehended in Glasgow by Donald McLean, police officer, whom he took to his lodging and gave up banknotes to the amount of £99. The Jury without leaving the box, returned a verdict of guilty. Sentyence - 14 years transportation.
