On Saturday last, Henry Pope and Wm. Bairstow, of Halifax, labourers, were committed to York Castle, by T. Horton, Esq. to take their trial at the next assizes, being charged with stealing from the person of Charles Griffiths, of Guiseley, paper-maker, on the King's highway, betwixt King Cross and Halifax, about a quarter before one o'clock in the morning, a bundle containing wearing apparel, and also two leather pocket books. Griffiths is a poor man, and has been travelling in search of work for the last five weeks, and had only 2d in his pocket when he left Manchester, at three o'clock on Friday afternoon, on his return home. Leeds Intelligencer, 16 Feb 1826. Yorkshire Spring Assizes. HENRY POPE (31), and WM. BAIRSTOW (24), charged with robbing Charles Griffiths, at Halifax, of two pocket-books and a bundle.— Guilty. York Herald, 1 April 1826. The following eighteen male convicts were removed from York Castle on Tuesday evening last, to be delivered on board the Retribution Hulk, Sheerness, pursuant to their respective sentences: ...
