The 'Lady Kennaway' was built in Calcutta in 1817. A large ship of 584 tons. Transported convicted prisoners to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1834, via Cork, Ireland. William Bakewell was 30 years old on arrival in VDL. His native place was Bolton, Derby. William was transported for 'Desertion' punished ### times for Desertion twice for absenting myself 6 months twice 10 weeks twice 8 weeks once punished with 4 dozen lashes on board for Theft. Occupation was listed as a Ploughman but he was courtmartialled at London St Georges Barracks Court Martial. William was 5'9 1/4" tall, fresh complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, WB. Inside rt. arm. D.B 3 Dots heart & wreath on left arm, single. 1835 Muster: Public Works. 24/5/1844: TOL 1845: Free Certificate. 30/4/1845: Permission to marry Jane Bray (Gilbert Henderson 1840). 9/6/1845: Married in the courthouse at Oatlands, William was 35, a labourer and free, Jane was 37, a widow. 1/6/1848 John Bakewell born Launceston. 21/2/1883: William Bakewell, Labourer, died aged 80, of Senilis, at the New Town Pauper Establishment and he was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Paupers section. 21/11/1866: Jane died, aged 57, of heart and lung disease at the Lunatic Asylum, New Norfolk.
