11 Jan 1826 - murdered: shot in the head while working as a Convict Constable on the hunt for bushrangers in the north of VDL. Memorial in the National Police Memorial, Canberra https://npm.org.au/honor-roll/magnus-baker/ Constable Baker was part of a posse of constables sent in pursuit of Thomas Jeffries a bushranger who was wanted for many criminal offences. About 12 miles from George Town Constable Baker was shot through the head by Jeffries who was later captured, convicted and hanged.

Monday July 21. Magnus Bakie, and Catherine Ferrier, alias Stewart, wife of Robert Stewart, lately keeper of the Russian tap-room, Canongate, were accused of theft and reset of theft. Bakie was charged with six different acts of housebreaking and theft, to four of which he pleaded guilty; and was sentenced to 14 years transportation. The woman pleaded not guilty, and the diet against her was deserted, pro loco et tempore, and she was committed on a new warrant. The Scots Magazine, 1 July 1817.
