National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/15/1651827 Jan 22 Prisoner name: Honor Baldwin. Court and date of trial: Old Bailey January Sessions 1827. Crime: Stealing a writing desk, the property of the Earl of Belfast. Initial sentence: Death. Annotated (Outcome): Considered at the Report in Council 14 March 1827. Petitioner(s): Earl of Belfast, of Pall Mall [London]. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Previous good character; family dependants; jury recommended her to mercy.

Honor Macrae nee Baldwin is my ancestor through her daughter Isobelle , born 1845 , at Bothwell. Isobelle married George Lamont of the Cathkin Run Station in Alexandra , Victoria. They had three daughters , one of which, Honoria b.1880, was my great grandmother , Honoria Rachel Mackay . Her husband Eric John Mackay , was killed on their farm at Boolara, Vic, in 1913 . He left poor Honoria with four children under 12 . They survived by moving to Melbourne where she ran a small corner milk bar . Her son Robert Millar Mackay b.1906 is my grandfather , died 1985.
Honor Baldwin was convicted at the CCC London (11/01/1827) for larceny - in a dwelling house (stealing a writing desk). Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Sovereign'. Honor was a married woman and her husband James also sailed on this ship, as a seaman. Their 3 children also were onboard. Honor was assigned to her husband James and they lived at Bothwell, Tasmania. James was a gaol keeper and later the Post Master. Honor received her Conditional Pardon on 21/11/1836. Honor Baldwin died, at Bothwell, on 20/07/1859.
Honora Baldwin is my great-great-grandmother. Her sentence was changed to transportation for life, and she came to Tasmania with her three daughters. Her husband James, worked his passage to Tasmania on the same voyage. Her daughter, also Honora, married Duncan McRae of Selma, Tasmania and they had a large family. Their child no 5, Christopher was born in 1850, and was my grandfather.
