Convict Notes
Adam Ballantine was listed as 13 years old on arrival. Native Place: Armagh. Adam was literate, protestant, 4'4¾" tall, fair freckled complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, scar on left cheek near mouth, scar left side of head above ear, scar lower right arm, two small scars on little finger of left hand. Assigned to Carter's Barracks for two years. 1837: Assigned to John Hickey, Maitland. 13/11/1839: Tried at Sydney Supreme Court for burglary, - sent to Norfolk Island until 1844 then sent to VDL. Described on arrival in VDL as: Stock Keeper/can milk, illiterate??, 5'5¼" tall, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, scar on left jaw, little fingers cripples, scar on left little finger, 3 small scars on left thumb, scar left side of mouth. 1846: Found guilty of theft - sentenced to hard labour. 20/6/1848: TOL Enlisted as a constable in the VDL Police Force. 10/7/1849: CP. March 1852: Returned to NSW and joined the police force - became a Mounted Trooper in the Southern District. 1853: Married Maria Crossley, a widow. No children listed on the NSW BDM. Adam was part of the Twofold Bay Police Force stationed a Pambula. 1857: A murderous uprising on the Americal whaling ship 'Junior' - Adam took the mutineers into custody and they were forwarded for trial at the Sydney Water Court before being extradited to America to face justice in that country. Nov. 1865: Promoted to the rank of Senior Constable. 1868: Retired from the police force and took up farming. 17/6/1882: Adam Ballantine died at Eden, NSW - His wife predeceased him in 1879, so his estate was left to his unofficially “adopted” daughter Emma Jane Wright (by then George) and her son Adam Henry Wright.
