Old Bailey: WILLIAM BALLARD. Theft: pocketpicking. 20th February 1834 Verdict Guilty Sentence Transportation WILLIAM BALLARD was indicted for stealing, on the 20th of February, 1 handkerchief, value 1s. 6d., the goods of William Hartnell, from his person. WILLIAM HARTNELL. On the 20th of February, about five o'clock in the afternoon, I was walking down Whitechapel - I felt something going out of my pocket - I turned round suddenly, and saw the prisoner drop my handkerchief from his hand behind him - I had laid hold of him at that time - I took it up and gave him to the officer - I was talking with Crumpton, the officer, at the same time. CHARLES CRUMPTON. I am an officer - I was walking with Hartnell - I saw him turn his head round - I turned, and saw the handkerchief in the prisoner's hand - he dropped it.(Property produced and sworn to.) GUILTY. Aged 19. - Transported for Seven Years. William Ballard was listed as 20 years old on arrival. Native Place: London William was literate, protestant, single, 5'1" tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, mole on left cheek, small scar on same, small scar on left eyebrow. 3/12/1841: COF - Listed as Bullard on Ancestry (certificates of freedom) - he was 27 years old.




William Ballard was 19 years old when convicted and 20 years old on arrival in NSW, he was transported for stealing 1 handkerchief, value 1s6d., the goods of William Hartnell. William was on the sick list of the Bengal Merchant, once for catarrh and once for synocha (a continued fever) and was discharged, cured. William is not listed in the NSW Gov records under either name and I could find no records of him.
