Convict Notes
On 24 January 1825 at the High Court of Justiciary, James McNeill alias Mathieson and William Balleny alias Ralston were convicted of Theft by Housebreaking and both 'sentenced to death'. On 14 March 1825 the death sentence was reduced to transportation for Life. James McNeill @ Mathieson later escaped from Van Diemen's Land, but was apprehended in March 1836 at County Lanark and again transported for Life.
