John Balls was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 2nd Oct 1822 and arriving 4th Mar 1823 with 161 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

At Beccles Quarter Sessions, on Monday sennight, John Balls, for stealing six hogs, the property of Thos. Farr, Esq. of Weston; Bury and Norwich Post, 24 Apr 1822. ------------------------------------------------------ On the 6th inst. the following convicts were removed from the County Gaol, in Ipswich, and put on board the Leviathan Hulk, Portsmouth Harbour: — William Snowling, William Dow, and Taylor Jacob, for 14 years each. William Barber, John Cousins, James Ling, Robert Palmer, James Thurlow, John Balls, George Hunter, John Warne, and Israel Rouse, for seven years each.
