Joseph BALMFORTH was convicted at York, England on 11 July 1840 for burglary - house breaking and stealing silver. Gaol Report "has been a thief for some time". 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'David Clarke' arriving 4 Oct 1841. Married man, wife Sarah at native place. 4 children. Aged 33 yrs; a woolcomber; 5'6 1/4" height; fresh complexion; black hair; blue eyes; tatoos; rings on fingers; can read. Protestant. Native place of birth: nr Halifax. Mother: Mary Brother: William VDL: 15 mth Probation Period. Assigned to work duties. 1846: at New Norfolk 27 July 1847: Ticket of Leave granted. 4 Sept 1849: Ticket of Leave revoked. 2 Oct 1849: Ticket of Leave restored. Marriage: 7 Feb 1853 - Joseph BALMFORTH to Maria HAZEL (nee Amelia WILLIAMS, transported on the 'Asia' 1847) at Hobart. (ref. 37/1/12 no. 258).
