William Bamford, arrived per British Sovereign is listed as crew on the ship Rory O’More, sailing from Launceston, bound for Melbourne, 7 Nov 1852. His status is not clear, as record does not indicate whether he came free or was free by servitude, etc.




CONVICT DEPARTMENT. February 19, 1847. The period for which the undermentioned persons were transported having expired, certificates to that effect have been granted them accordingly: William Bamford, British Sovereign; Launceston Examiner, 26 Feb 1847.




William BAMFORD was convicted at Dublin, Court Martial on 14 May 1840 for desertion from army - had been away 12 days. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'British Sovereign' arriving 17 March 1841. Ship's report: "well behaved and anxious to be useful". Aged 33yrs; a soldier/wool comber; single man. Native Place: Burnley, Lancaster, England. Work services in the Colony of VDL. Ticket of Leave granted 12 Aug 1845 Free by servitude 13 May 1847 Free Certificate issued 1848
