Saturday 7th- when Charles Bamfield, James Fitzgerald, and Patrick Kennedy, were severally indicted on four capital charges, viz. sheep stealing, and stealing in three several dwelling houses, putting the inmates thereof in bodily fear. The prisoners had absconded from a government gang; the consequence of that offence was hunger, and they robbed the four several places as they came to them out of their necessity, just as they came upon them, without previous consultation as to any particular house they would attack, or what kind of property they would steal. Guilty. —Remanded. (The Australian 20 Aug 1830, p. 3.) [Charles Bamfield aka Bampfyld or Bamfyld was sent to Norfolk Island commuted from a death sentence. – CHRIS ISON]

19th Sept [1839]. Five desperate characters, BAMFIELD [Charles Bampfyld] , RYAN, SMITH, HEFFERNAN and DEVINE while at work on the beach opposite the Prisoners Barracks, seized a boat which was occupied by Coxswain SEGSWORTH and some officers, drove them out and armed them- selves with spades. There were 4 oars in the boat and used a spade for a steer oar, and steered for the reef. The bar being high, on bringing the boat over the reef, they gave 3 cheers and pulled S.E. The Garrison was alarmed and the military under arms, and in the meantime 3 boats manned and sent with the Military and AARON PRICE in pursuit of them. They were overtaken by the first boat at about 4 miles distance, brought back and lodged in Gaol. The Commandant sentenced them to receive 300 lashes each and to work in chains. 2 of the men received their corporal punishment the same evening within 3 hours of the offence having been committed.
