Portsmouth Hulks. Leviathan HO-9-8_5 page 17. Received from York, 8 May 1823. Joseph Bancroft, age 29, Highway Rby, Tried York, 15 March 1823, 14 yrs, To NSW 13 Aug 1823.
JOSEPH BANCROFT (29), and FLETCHER (33). were charged with a highway robbery, committed on the night of the 29th Nov. last, the person Joseph Eyre, in the parish Sheffield. The prosecutor had a silver watch and 18s. in silver taken from him. Bancroft pleaded GUILTY. Fletcher was found GUILTY. Yorkshire Gazette, 29 March 1823. SATURDAY, March 20. As soon the Judge had taken his seat upon the bench, the following prisoners were placed at the bar. ...Joseph Bancroft, Wm. Fletcher, … for highway robbery. On these prisoners, his lordship passed the awful sentence DEATH. Yorkshire Gazette, 5 April 1823.
