4/9/1826:Solomon Lyons (Tottenham 1818) Married Phoebe Benjamin (Mary Anne 1822) at St John’s, Parramatta. ----------------------------------------------------- 1828 NSW Census. Householder – Edward Kelly, signed his name. Residence- Parramatta. Edward Kelly, 50, F.S. Chapman, 1817, 7 years, laborer, Parramatta, Roman catholic. Mary Kelly, age 43, C.F. Tellicherry 1803, Catholic, Fruiterer, Parramatta, Solomon Lyons, age 30, T.L. Tottenham, 1818, Life, Weaver (?), protestant. Phoebe Lyons, 31, C, Mary Ann 2, 1822, Life, wife of Solomon, protestant. -------------------------------------------------- Solomon Lyons was Jewish, not protestant. 17/7/1839 Commercial Journal and Advertiser, Sydney: William Niblett, baker, was charged by a diminutive, Jew, of the name of Solomon Lyons, but generally known as pedlar Solly, who is possessed of a license for hawking, and his principles being none of the best, got into Mr. Kiblett’s debt to the tune of 3s. According to the Jew s affidavit, as he was going through the street with his licensed barrow, Mr. Niblett, asked the price of some stockings, and directly took two pair, when Solly tried to rescue them from him, Mr. Niblett knock him down over his barrow. Upon Solly being questioned, and cross-questioned, the court saw through the case directly. Mr. William Cox, a highly respectable shopkeeper came into court, having seen a great part of the transaction, and positively swore he knew Lyons, meaning the complainant, and would not believe him on his oath. On the other part, he had known the old man Niblet for years, and for his own part never knew any thing wrong of him. Case dismissed. 1878: Solomon Lyons died and was buried at Parramatta - said to be 83 but was 76. 26/10/1878 The Clumberland Mercury, Parramatta: HEBREW BURIAL.__On Saturday last, all that was mortal of Solomon Lyons, was conveyed for burial to the Sydney Hebrew Cemetery, from the Parramatta Destitute Asylum. Lyons was over 80 years at the time of his decease.. Years and years ago he was a wealthy Parramattonian. A quarter of a century back, he was gate-keeper at the institution in which he died.

PHOEBE BENJAMIN, Theft > pocketpicking, 12th September 1821. 1242. PHOEBE BENJAMIN was indicted for stealing, on the 15th of August , one watch, value 15 s.; one seal, value 3 s., and one key, value 2 s., the goods of George Buckley from his person . GEORGE BUCKLEY. I am steward of an East Indiaman . On the 15th of August at half-past two o'clock in the morning, I was in Whitechapel , going home to Kennigton-lane - I had been drinking, but knew what I was about, and met the prisoner. I am sure she is the woman; we chatted together for three minutes, she asked me to give her something to drink, I gave her 6 d., my brother, mother, and sister, were about four yards a-head, agreeing for a hackney coach, she kept me in conversation three minutes, I then left her, she was close to me, when I gave her the money, a man said feel if you have got your watch, I felt and missed it; it was safe just before - we went after her with the watchman, who overtook her - she swore she had not got it, he overhawled her, and found it in her bosom. SAMUEL STOCKTON . I am a watchman. Buckley came to me; I overtook the prisoner and asked if she had got the watch, she said she had not. I found it in her bosom. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. He gave it me to keep till morning, I walked off with it. GUILTY . Aged 28. Transported for Life . First Middlesex Jury, before W. Arabin, Esq.
