Benjamin was born in Witchampton, Dorset, to Mary/Maria and Charles Bannan who came from Ireland via the Isle of Man. He lied about his age and married Eliza Watkins who came from a "comfortably off" family. They had a child, Henry Watkins Bannan in 1839, then Eliza died about 5 months later, he went bankrupt and fled to London and married Jane Lidyard.
