Hugh BANNISTER was convicted at Exeter, Devon on 9 April 1844 for stealing a piece of leather and a towel from a stable yard. Previous offence. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Barossa' arriving 6 Sept 1844. Married man - wife Cecelia and 4 children, at Exeter. Aged 44yrs; 5'3 3/4"; Roman Catholic. Native Place: Manchester, England. Brother John and sister Jane at Glasgow. (ref. Indent record) 15 month Probation Period in Colony. First assignment to Buckland, Tasmania. 20 November 1845: in hospital, Hobart. 23 November 1845: Died, in hospital, New Norfolk.
