Wilts Assizes. Wm. Harris, Joseph Johnson, and Wm. Bargery were indicted for having assaulted and robbed Mr. Geo. Neate, of 128/.; and Caroline Harris for having received the same, knowing it to have been stolen.— On the 19th Oct. the prosecutor went to Devizes market, and on his return home in his gig, was stopped by three men. He called out, You rascals. what do you want? They then searched his pockets; but, in order to save his money, threw it on the ground, and one of the men picked it up, and likewise took some papers, accounts, which the prosecutor requested they would return him, us they would use them. The men replied, you may think yourself well off. The prisoners were found the Black Dog, Studley, and a considerable sum of money was found upon each them, but them, but not altogether amounting to the sum the prosecutor had lost. The Jury found the prisoners guilty. The three male prisoners were sentenced transported for 15 years, and the woman for 14 years. Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 12 March 1838.
