Convict Notes
Joseph Barker was tried for taking two cows which had been grazing on a marsh and driving them to sell to a butcher in Shoreditch, London. This involved removing a locked gate at around 3 am. Both cows were near to calving and belonged to a cow-keeper (which is usually a person who sells milk). The cows were worth about £15 so this is a serious theft. Barker was given a death sentence, but it was respite to 21 years transportation. He was 48 years old.
