6/3/1841 Cambridge Independent Press Cambridgeshire, England: STEALING ONIONS,___George Simpkin (41), and Robert Barker (34), charged with stealing a quantity of onions, the property of the Rev. William Small Parr Wilder, of Carlton.___Mr. TOZER stated the case to the jury. The onions were hung in the tool-house, and were a new variety between the globe and the white spanish, produced by a natural inoculation having taken place between onion stems of those distinct species, which had been suffered to grow near to each other in Mr. Wilders's garden. From the peculiarity of the kind, and from particular marks on some of the onions, Mr. Wilders's gardener was enabled to identify them. The prisoners lived at West Wratting, which is some little distance from Carlton, and suspicion fell on them from the circumstance that one of them had been lately employed by Mr. Wilders, and that the tool-house had been broken open by some one evidently acquainted with the premises, (which appeared from the manner in which the window had been fastened, and in which it was forced open,) and also that the two prisoners had been seen together on the day of the robbery. The quantity stolen was about two bushels. Both prisoners were found Guilty.__A former conviction was proved against Barker.__No sentences were passed to-day, and the court adjourned till next morning at ten. Robert Barker was listed as 35 years old on arrival (born 1806). Native Place: Hatstock Robert could read, was 5'7" tall, sallow complexion, black hair, small black whiskers, brown eyes, scar over right eyes, scar left side of mouth, stout made, married, 5 children. Father: Daniel at Saffron Waldon. 15/10/1845: TOL 5/10/1847: CP 10/5/1848: Certificate of Freedom. Marriage 1. Lucy Barton died C1828 1 son, John Barker Marriage 2. Ann Oak died 1945, Cambridge, Eng. Twins 1839 Charles Barker and Stephen Oak Barker. Marriage 3. 28/9/1846: Margaret Lamb, convict (Tory 1845). Her date of death is uncertain. Robert's sons John and Stephen and an aunt arrived in Tasmania C1856. 9/12/1890: Robert Barker died of Cancer, aged 84, registered at Campbell Town, Tas.
