BARKWORTH, Elizabeth (c1783-1859) Tried - 18 August 1813 Kent Gaol Delivery Aged about 30, Elizabeth was tried before the Kent Court in 1813 and received a 7 year sentence for larceny. She had been a housekeeper and she arrived in the Colony of New South Wales as a convict on the ship Broxbornebury. (Source: SRNSW Col Sec Papers, Letters Sent Reel 6004; 4/3493 p382) [This marriage apparently did not go ahead] 1815 - Elizabeth Barkworth married John Williams by Banns at St Johns C of E, Parra on 15 July 1815 (John Williams, aged 26, Prisoner, arrived per Fortune, Abode: St Johns [Parramatta], Signed; & Elizabeth Barkworth, aged 28, Prisoner, arrived per Broxbornebury, Abode: St Johns [Parramatta], Signed X; married 15 Jul 1815, registered St Johns Church of England Parramatta by Banns by Samuel Marsden; Witness: Patrick Goughan, Signed X; Witness: Elizabeth Hobley, Signed X. Source: St John's Church of England, Parramatta NSW: Church Register - Marriages; ML ref: Reel SAG 55-56 & V1815-1796-3A). [There does not appear to be any children born to the couple]. Before 1822 – Elizabeth Williams (nee Barkworth) left her legal husband John Williams and was living with Thomas Haynes in 1822 until her death in 1859. 1822 Muster: Elizabeth BARKWORTH, con, Broxbornebury, 7 years, GS to J Macarthur, Parra (A00826) Thomas HAYES (sic), con, Morley, 14 years, GS to J Macarthur, Parra (A09663) 1823-1825 Muster: Elizabeth BARKWORTH, FS, Broxbornebury, 14 years, wife (?) of Thomas Hynes (sic), Parra (1126) Thomas HAYNES, TL, Morley 1817, carpenter, Parra (24512) & child - Ann Haines, Age: 3 (?), Arrival status: BC (Born in Colony); Occupation/Residence &c, Parramatta, Child of Thomas Haines 1824, 24 Sept. – Elizabeth Barker received a Certificate of Freedom issued on this date, described as a native of Hull, Yorkshire, 35 years-old, previously a servant, 5’3” tall, with ruddy complexion, brown hair & hazel eyes. (Source: SRNSW Convict COF #157/2747, Reel 601) 1824 – John WILLIAMS alias Ambrose, received a COF on 29/09/1824. He had been tried at Middlesex GD on 20/04/1803 with a 7 year term & arrived in Sydney in 1806 on the ship Fortune. John was a native of Norwich, aged 42, a bricklayer, 5’4½” tall, fair ruddy complexion, brown hair & hazel eyes. [Note: Their mother’s name (found on BDM Index) was listed as Maria. Was Elizabeth their mother?] 1841, 31 Nov. – In 1841 Thomas Haines received a land grant (town allotment) in Villiers St., Parramatta in the Parish of Field of Mars. Elizabeth received her Certificate of Freedom in 1824, 4 years after her term had expired and it is one of the few that survived for the Broxbornebury convict women. Elizabeth Barkworth married John Williams in 1815 at Parramatta. After John's death in 1819, Elizabeth was a Government Servant of John Macarthur at Parramatta and later became a houskeeper for Thomas Haines. Elizaberth married Thomas Haines in 1848 and they had three daughters. Elizabeth is buried at Mays Hill, Parramatta.
