Soon after the death of his first wife, Joseph commenced a relationship with Elizabeth Beasley, the daughter of Charles Beasley (Convict, 1798, "Barwell") and Mary Thomas (Convict, 1802, "Glatton"). Joseph and Elizabeth had a large family, 12 children between 1836 and 1862. They did eventually formalise the union by marrying, 5th March 1851 at Sydney.

On arrival in the colony, Joseph was assigned to the surveyor, John Oxley. almost two years later, he married Elizabeth (Eliza) McIntosh who was employed by Oxley as a housekeeper. The couple appear in the 1828 Census: Page 41... [Ref B0370] Barnes, Joseph, 24, ticket of Leave, Asia 1825, 14 years, Protestant, coachman, Sussex Street, Sydney. Barnes, Eliza, 21, came free, Wyndham, 1815. It would appear that there were no children to this union and Eliza died in 1835.
