Family connections for Richard (Barnes) are: Some amendments added Sep 2025. BARNES Richard (Barnes) was born on 5 1 1783. He was tried for stealing at Reading Berkshire Quarter Sessions sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW on 11 3 1803 after a voyage of 6months on HMS GLATTON. He married Mary Ann (Whitton age15 her first marriage) on 19 8 1811 at St Matthews CofE Windsor. He was Free by Servitude by 1812. In 1825 he was a landholder at Minto. He was a publican near Campbelltown when he died on 12 10 1826 age43 after falling from his horse while intoxicated at Petersham Hill & was buried at St James CofE Sydney. [Some details taken from this Website] Mary Ann (Whitton) was born in 1790or1796/7. She was recorded in 1802 with her parents at Hawkesbury. She was recorded in 1814, apparantly, with her stepfather at Hawkesbury. She is recorded in 1825 with her family at Minto. She married secondly John (Ecc/ggleston/e) emancipist on 5 3 1827 at St Peters CofE Campbelltown & produced 7more children. It appears that her children by Richard (Barnes) were adopted by her second husband. She is recorded in 1828 with her family at St Patrick Lower Minto. She is recorded in 1825 with her parents at Minto. She is recorded in 1828 with her mother at St Patrick Lower Minto. 3.Edward (Barnes/Ecc/ggleston) was born on 11 8 1816 & baptised on 23 2 1817 at St Lukes CofE Liverpool. Mary Ann re-married in 1827 to one John Eccleston (Convict, Lord Sidmouth, 1819). In the 1828 Census, the Barnes children are all listed as Eccelstons Sainty, Malcolm & Johnson, Keith; Census of New South Wales, November 1828: Page 137… [Ref E0272] Eggleston, John, 30, free by servitude, Lord Sidmouth, 1818, 7 years, Catholic, settler and innkeeper, Lower Minto. [Ref E0273] Eggleston, Mary, 32, born in the colony. [Ref E0274] Eggleston, Eliza, 15, born in the colony. [Ref E0275] Eggleston, Edward, 13, born in the colony. [Ref E0276] Eggleston, Jane, 11, born in the colony. [Ref E0277] Eggleston, Isabella, 9, born in the colony. [Ref E0278] Eggleston, Amelia, 7, born in the colony. [Ref E0279] Eggleston, Richard, 4, born in the colony. [Ref E0280] Eggleston, Henry, 2, born in the colony. ## Clearly this listing includes all the ‘Barnes’ step-children as well as young Henry Eccleston.

The deathj of Richard Barnes... Sydney Gazette Sat 14 Oct 1826 p.3.... A man named Barnes, a publican, near Campbell-town, was killed, while in a state of intoxication, by a fall from his horse, on the top of Petersham-hill. Mr. W.C. Wentworth, who saw the accident, immediately rode up, and humanely afforded every assistance to the unfortunate man. He was conveyed to Sydney in a cart, and taken to the General Hospital, but before he arrived there, animation had fled. Mr. Wentworth handed over to the superintendent of Police, 17 dollars and a rupee, and some coppers, which he found upon the hapless man. A coroner's Inquest was held on the same day, Thursday, verdict - accidental death.

In the colony, Richard married Mary Ann Whitton. They married in 1811 at Windsor. Mary Ann and Richard had 7 children between 1812 and 1825. Richard died in 1826 and left Mary with this young family. Mary was the daughter of Edward Whitton (First Fleet Convict, Scarborough, 1788) and Ann Slater (Third Fleet Convict, Queen, 1791).
