Under log of injuries "Dec 21 West Barnes Disease or wound: Mania. When put off sick list Jan 20. How disposed of: Hospital" Under General Remarks "Mani - one case manifested itself in the latter part of the voyage and apparently unaccompanied with any other disease-it occurred in a man above sixty, although on the Hulk list his age is put down at 41, and I here mention that generally in those lists the prisoners are stated to be ten years younger than they appear to be-he on our arrival in Sydney was sent to an Asylum."

West Barnes is my 5th great grandfather. He was tried and convicted of attempting to murder his wife, Mary Ann Barnes (nee Martin) on 27 Jan 1843 in Alford, Lincolnshire, England. He stated when taken into custody that if he had a gun he would have shot his two sons.
