Old Bailey Online 498. LAZARUS BARNET was indicted for stealing, on the 17th of January , one pair of stockings, value 2 s. , the goods of James George Cazaly . JAMES GEORGE CAZALY . I am a hosier , and live in Bishopsgate-street . On the 17th of February, about half-past eight o'clock at night, these stockings were stolen off a wire in the shop. They have not been found. GEORGE MOORE . I was Mr. Cazaly's servant. I saw the prisoner put his hand in, reach round the wire guard, pull the stockings off, and run away. I ran after him, and saw him drop something - he was stopped in Spital-quare; I am sure he is the man. I only lost sight of him in turning the corner. CHARLES BALLARD . I assisted in securing the prisoner, and saw him fall; something fell from his bosom. Prisoner's Defence. I know nothing of them. GUILTY . Aged 22. Transported for Seven Years . It appeared that in June last, the prisoner had entered into au agreement with Mr. George Cavenagh of the Gazette Office, to work us u Compositor for the term of six months. About n month since, Barnett absconded and was sent to the House of Correction for fourteen days by the Bench. His sentence expired about a week since, and Barnett called at the Office and received the arrears of wages that were duo to him, and promised lo go lo work on the following morning ; instead of which he had not gone near the Office Mr. Cavenagh said that Barnett was an old offender, and had been several times sent lo gaol from other offices for the same offence. The Bench sentenced Barnett to be confined and kept lo hard labor for two calendar months. Lazarus Barnett a hired servant to the Gazette Office was brought before the Police on warrant, charged with absenting himself from his work for three days. In defence Lazarus said that ho was unwell and unable to attend ; but Mr. O'Brien, the Collector of the Office, deposed, that during one of the days he was so absent, be was seen by bim in a state of intoxication. The Bench sentenced him to be worked upon the Tread Mill for thirty days. This is Barnett's third conviction of absconding from this office within the last four months. Lazarus Barnett, and another named Hale, are in custody of the police, on suspicion of having stolen a silver table «poon, having engraved thereon the initials I. C. L No owner has yet been found, and the prisoners stood remanded to afford an opportunity of making inquiry. Goulburn Herald (NSW : 1860 - 1864) Sat 30 Jun 1860 Page 2 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE ACCIDENT: -On Thursday morning last, an old man named Lazarus Barnett, living at Mrs. Evans' in Auburn-street, fell into the fire in a fit. Be was severely burned all down one arm and side, and on the back near the shoulder bone. He was removed to the hospital and is now getting better, though the injury is very severe. Barnett is subject to fits, sometimes having as many as a dozen in a day.
