Convict Notes

John Barn(e)s was butler to the Marquis of Bath. On arrival in Van Diemans Land he worked as butler for two colonial secretaries. In 1836 John Barnes petitioned for clemency based on his good conduct in this role and undersigned by J Burnett, former Colonial Secretary and John Montague, Colonial Secretary of Van Dieman's Land. Gaoler's comment says he may have been transported before.

John Barns was tried twice at the May 1830 Old Bailey session charged with stealing glasses and plate from the Marquis of Bath. A great deal of the evidence is about how identifiable glasses were. He was acquitted on one count https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/record/t18300527-196 But convicted on the other.
