'Bolairo Station' It is not known when William obtained Bolairo Station but he was in possession in 1839. He had a total of 100 acres, 50 cultivated, 3 horses, 64 cattle and 2 sheep. William is listed in the 1839 census as the licencee with superintendent/overseer James Shanley. It was predominantly a cattle station and there were 6 people living there. When he died in 1874, aged 78 he had extensive holdings. Property owned by William at the time of his death included 'The Station Inn', Liverpool, property at Moore Street Liverpool, 100 acres at Lower Minto, 7 residences and tenements in George Street, Sydney, opposite Christ Church Street. Laurence near Central Station, and Bolairo Station at Adaminaby.
William and Elizabeth had 9 children. On September 25 1836, Elizabeth died, only 1 day after giving birth to twin daughters (only 1 of whom, Elizabeth, survived). William was now a fairly well to do settler. a widower with a large young family. He married again. This time to Sarah Rainy. (No details found as yet), arrived in the colony, aged 19 in 1934. William and Sarah had another family, 6 further children.
In the colony, William did quite well. On 15th October 1821, he married Elizabeth Craft. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel Craft (Third Fleet Convict, 1791, "Salamander") and Elizabeth Davies (Convict, 1792, "Kitty"). Only 10 years after arrival, in the 1828 Census, William is recorded: Page 42.... [Ref B0477] The census listed William as aged 32, ticket of leave holder, arrived per ship 'Hadlow', of protestant religion, and as a labouring tenant at Lower Minto (Liverpool). Living with William were his wife Elizabeth aged 28 born in the colony, son William Jr. aged 5 years, born in the colony, son George aged 3 years born in the colony, daughter Mary aged 1 year born in the colony. Also two employees were listed - Thomas Brown aged 40, ticket of leave, arrived 'Indian' 1810, sentence life, labourer, and James Shanley aged 28 Government Service (assigned), arrived 'Boyne' 1826, catholic, sentence life. (James Shanley was the father of Mary Ann Shanley who became the wife of William's son Alexander Barrett).
William was tried at Leicester Assizes on 23 March 1818 for stealing notes and coins from Mr William Grundy. Mr Grundy was William's 'master' at the time. He was sentenced to Death, then reprieved to transportation for life and transported on the ship 'Hadlow' which left England with 150 males, arriving with 149. The ship's indent described William as a labourer, aged 22, 5 foot seven inches tall, of fair and ruddy complexion, with flaxen hair and hazel eyes.
