ADM 101/50/2 Medical journal of the convict ship Marquis of Hastings for 2 July 1825 to 9 January 1826, which sailed to New South Wales, by G.S. Rutherford, surgeon and superintendent. Folio 9: James Barret, aged 30; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Taken ill, 1 November 1825 at Rio De Janiero. Discharged 6 November 1825 cured.




James Barrett was listed as 30 years old on arrival. Native Place: Wiltshire. James was 5'6¾" tall, brown hair, blue eyes, brown complexion, well. Assigned to Mr. Willoughby Bean, Brisbane Water. Still there in 1828. 1838: TOL, Brisbane Water 1/4/1841: Recommended for a CP 1/4/1841: CP Dec. 1839: Permission to marry Ann Gilham (John Renwick 1838 - Listed as Gillham) - Ann was 24 and on bond - James was 44 and had a TOL. No marriage registration on NSW BDM - Ann Gilham married Charles Newman (Marquis of Huntley 1830) in 1840 at Brisbane Waters.




Salisbury Journal, 14 Mar 1825 Our assizes were not terminated till Wednesday evening.- The following sentences were passed on the prisoners who were tried and convicted. Death.- ...Jas.Barret, for breaking into and stealing beef from the house of Wm.Holloway, at Hatch. (All the above prisoners, 24 in number, have been reprieved).
