Convict Notes

23 Mar 1856 - convicted at Hobart of rape of 8 year old girl Mary Anne Palmer/Pender on 22nd July 1856. - Court record states it a carnal knowledge. Judge said child required education about religion in order to make an oath to tell the truth, and adjourned case until after that had occurred. At the trial, women and children were told to leave the court so the evidence of the child could be heard. Barron found to be guilty, sentenced to death. This was later commuted to life in penal servitude. https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/SC32-1-7/SC32-1-7_0174 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8782717 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8786394
