Convict Notes
City Sessions Court – Friday Jan 31. Ellen M'cMahon,, Anne Barry, and Mary Kelly, three old prostitutes, were indicted for stealing £1 11s. from the person of William M'Dunnell. It appealed from the evidence of the prosecutor, a remarkably fine boy, about 14 years old, from Keumare, that being in town about fortnight since, he went, after his dinner, into Liindewell -lane for necessary purpose, when Ellen told him she would show him a less exposed place, and took him into a hall, where he was immediately seized upon by two of the prisoners while the third searched his pockets of their contents, and threatened, if he called out, to brain him. The cross-examination by Mr. Howard excited much merriment. Are you an amorous lad?—l don't know what you mean, You are loving kind of a fellow, fond of meeting a little girI ?— Witness —No. Was your coat off? Witness —They pulled it off. Were your pantaloons off? —Witness —No. Was there a bed in the room?—No; there was straw. And not a very bed for a Kerryman ?—A Kerryman lies in as good a bed as any other. Recorder. Well now, was'nt it a love off or you were?-.lf I wanted that kind, (addressing the Recorder.) your Worship, I'd get lashings of them in Glanalongh. (more laughter.) Oh, then, you are fond of the Glanalongh girls?—Just neighbours—not in that wav, your Worship (again turning towards and addressing the Recorder. ) Sure girl would not take a fancy to you, would fancy the money, not me. The evidence of the witness was corroborated by two Policemen. The prisoners were found Guilty, and sentenced to be transported for seven years. Cork Constitution, 4 Feb 1834.
