Richard Luke Barry was a Convict Reg No. 314, he was sentenced on the 7th August 1849 to 15 years and transported to Western Australia in 1851 (he was 23 years of age at the time) on the ship: the Mermaid, Sentenced for Burglary in Gloucestershire Courts. The Mermaid was a 473 ton barque built in 1817 in Calcutta, It was employed as a convict transport and left Portsmouth, England on January 9, 1851 bound for the Swan River Colony. The voyage took 123 days and the Mermaid arrived in Fremantle on May 13, 1851 with 91 passengers and 208 convicts. JP Anderson was the Captain of the ship and Alex Kilroy was the Ship Surgeon. Physical descriptions of Convicts were listed to assist with identification if they tried to escape, Richard Luke Barry was 5'5" tall, dark brown hair, grey eyes, long face, fresh complexion. He had a cut on the nose, face pitted, cut on side of the left knee and a cut on his left arm. He married Bridget Ellen Brannan (Brennan) on 10th October 1853 in Perth, Western Australia , she was Irish and came out on the Sabrina, which may have been a Bride Ship where women were sent to be brides for the convicts, ex-convicts and other early settlers. She was a seamstress (listed as a Needlewoman). Carpenter. employed 10 T/L men 1863-1874 most of them carpenters. Possibly also under contract at Wonnerup where R. Barry employed 2 T/L men. one a carpenter during 1867. He built a house in Angina St, Mount Hawthorn with his son and that is still there today. He went blind at age 57 years (1885). Death notice in the Newspaper said that he was an old colonial and had been in Australia for 54 years.
