Family connections for Elizabeth (Bartlett) are: BARTLETT Elizabeth (Bartlett) was born in 1754/74. She was tried at Kilmainham Dublin Ireland in February 1795 & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 2 1796 after a voyage of 6months on MARQUIS CORNWALLIS. She had a relationship & arrived on Norfolk Island pregnant on HMS RELIANCE on 13 2 1796. She produced a child:] [Some details taken from this Website] 1.William (named Cullen) was born on 16 7 1796 on Norfolk Island & died in infancy. .. >>>Elizabeth (Bartlett) had a second relationship by 1798 with James Bryan/Bryen (Cullen/Cully/Collins his third relationship), produced perhaps 5children & later married him. She was recorded as convict off stores on Norfolk Island in February 1805. On 26 12 1807 she went to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) as part of the first evacuation on HMS PORPOISE with her family, arriving on 17 1 1808; to New Norfolk Derwent Valley. She married James Bryan/Bryen (Cullen/Cully/Collins on 25 9 1809 at St Davids CofE Hobart. She is recorded as off stores in Hobart Town on 2 10 1818. After her husbands death in 1821 she transferred 40acres to her son in law John (Pearse) on 10 1 1824. She lived for a while at New Norfolk Hospital & died on 15 3 1836 age82 mother of perhaps 6children & was buried, as (Rose), at New Norfolk Old General Cemetery. James Bryan/Bryen (Cullen/Cully/Collins) was born about 1742 & became a jockey. He married firstly (1of3) Elizabeth (Welch). He was tried (with his wife for receiving) for stealing clothes, on 12 3 1785, of John (Crandell a supposed conspirator) & John (Shingler) at Old Bailey on 6/8 4 1785, sentenced to 7years in Africa, held probably at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & hulks CERES at Plymouth & CENSOR on the Thames river & arrived in NSW as a convict (in 1788 on First Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH (according to Ref:'Exiled...') or on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH according to this Website; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate). In May 1789? he was charged with insolence to a soldier/sergeant over the felling of a tree. (In Ref:'People...' he is recorded as arriving on Norfolk Island on 13 10 1788 (listed as Bryan (Collins)). He was sent to Norfolk Island on 5 3 1790 on HMS SIRIUS, arriving on 17/19 3 1790 (the date of its sinking on reef near Kingston Pier Slaughter Bay), a date that conflicts. He is recorded in 1794 as previously being a jockey. In 1795 he was one of the 50convicts (which included John (Herbert ROYAL ADMIRAL 1792) & James Bryan (Cullen SCARBOROUGH 1788or1790)) who stowed away on ENDEAVOUR at Port Jackson on journey to England; the ENDEAVOUR was unseaworthy & was wrecked/scuttled at Dusky Bay New Zealand & the accompanying ship FANCY together with an abandoned ship PROVIDENCE found on beach at Dusky Bay brought them to Norfolk Island on 16 1 1796. He had a second (2of3) relationship with Ann (Coomb/s/Combs her second (2of3) relationship) from June 1794 (the Ref:'People...' states they married on 5 11 1791 (not shown in group ceremony listing for November 1791) & husband was Bryan (Collins)). He was Free by Servitude by 1796. He soon became a successful landholder on grant at Grenville Vale which he farmed. He became a constable. He was Free by Servitude in December 1791 a settler with his wife on 12acres. He left Norfolk Island on 5 3 1795 on FANCY & returned on that ship on 5 7 1795. He is recorded in 1796 with 2x12acre properties (plot no's 76 & 77 on southwest side of the island), gaining 23acres (plot no.111 near Phillipsburg/north coast) later. In February 1805 he is recorded as settler from convict off stores on Norfolk Island. In 1807 he had 38.5acres & went to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) as part of the first evacuation (for which volunteers apparantly had been called with appropriate compensation offerred & for which he may have tried to decline as some successful farmers were asked to stay) on 26 12 1807 on HMS PORPOISE with his family, arriving on 17 1 1808; to a grant of 65acres at New Norfolk Derwent Valley. He built a stone cottage followed by a Georgian mansion. In 1813 he was appointed Superintendent of Government Stock of Derwent. He obtained a further 40acres in 1818. He was recorded on 2 10 1818 as off stores at Hobart Town. He died on 5/12 4 1821 age79 father of maybe 5children & in debt at New Norfolk accidently by pistol shot by own hand & was buried at St Davids CofE Hobart; after which his widow transferred 40acres to her son in law John (Pearse) on 10 1 1824.
