COURT MARTIAL 1844, 27 September: Court Martial, Corfu – Private Thomas Bartlett, 97th Regiment of Foot, convicted for striking a superior officer (Corporal Dunn, Rifles Brigade); sentenced to 7 years’ transportation (Judge Advocate General's Office: general courts martial registers, abroad; 1829-50; at https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-1693575437/view, image 87). Prior to 1800, three unconnected Foot Regiments bore the identification number of 97th Foot. In 1805, a new 97th Foot was formed from the Queen's German Regiment. In 1816, it was renumbered as the 96th, while the existing 98th became the 97th Regiment, before being disbanded altogether. In 1824, another 97th Foot was formed: the 97th (The Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot. This continued until 1881 when this regiment was linked to the 50th (Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot to form The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment.
