Rebecca Barton was transported on "Northampton' convict ship after being sentenced to seven years, at the Suffolk Assizes (starting Wed 23 March and ending Fri 25 March) Bury & Norwich Post, Wed 30 March 1814 p.2 BURY, March 30 - SUFFOLK ASSIZES Rebecca Barton and Mary Carter, convicted of stealing 64 [pounds] in Bank notes from the person of Keyer Seeley, of Bures ; and James Curtis for stealing a hunting silver watch from Richard Leggatt of Framlingham, were severally sentenced to seven years’ transportation.” Mary Carter, her co-accused, was also transported with Rebecca on "Northampton". They were kept in the jail in Bury for over seven months until mid November when they were transported overland in hackney coaches to Deptford, on the Thames, where the convict transport ship was taking on the female prisoners for NSW: Bury & Norwich Post, Wed 23 Nov 1814 p.2: "Convicts — On Wednesday last, Rebecca Barton and Mary Carter, two female convicts, were removed from our gaol [Bury Gaol] and put on board Northampton, bound for Botany Bay in Hackney Coaches."
