According to a written autobiography by her son Josephus Henry Barsden (held in the Mitchell Library), Sarah was born @ 1775, and ran the Black Horse Inn in Horsham, Sussex, a barracks town. Her Court records say she was a spinster, however according to her son's account her 'husband' - Joseph Henry Barsden - was a master mariner smuggling in brandy and other contraband from France, to be sold at the Inn. Barsden was chased one evening by the coastguard, ran his ship aground near Beachy Head, and fled for France never to be heard from again. In the meantime authorities catch up with Sarah, she is tried Tried at the Michaelmas Quarter Sessions on 7th October 1796 and sentenced to 7 years transportation. It's not until November 1799 that Sarah departs England and with a one month old baby - the Josephus H Barsden jr. Sarah and baby Joseph left Spithead, Portsmouth on the transport ship 'Speedy' on 1 November 1799. By the 15th November Sarah had taken ill and died. She was buried at sea in the Bay of Biscay, her baby was believed to also have died and was about to also be cast into the ocean before an officer's wife (Mrs Johnstone, wife of Captain Johnstone) hear the baby cry and had him brought to her. This child, Josephus henry Barsden (jr) had a successful and long life in the NSW colony. He wrote his memoir with the above information. It is interesting to note that Joseph junior did not know either of his parents. His story has come from a combination of the records he has access to and convicts or other adults who were on the voyage with his mother. The dates between Sarah's conviction and departure from England are almost three years, with her baby being born shortly before her departure. Did Joseph senior somehow secretly return to England and visit Sarah, enabling her to conceive young Joseph? Prisoners were occasionally allowed to have visitors. Or, was Sarah involved with another man, and created the Joseph story?
