Text type Trial account Defendants DAVID BASFORD Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 15th April 1830 Reference Number t18300415-208 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 875. DAVID BASFORD was indicted for stealing, on the 10th of March , 1lb. weight of tea, value 5s. , the goods of Edward Daker Harley . JOSEPH MICHAEL ROSE . I am shopman to Mr. E. D. Harley, who lives near Blenheim-steps, Marlborough-street . The prisoner came and asked for an ounce of barley-sugar -I was busy; and as he was leaving the shop he was stopped with the tea, which I had put on the counter just before with some other parcels. JAMES KENNERLEY . I am a music-copier. I saw the prisoner lurking about the shop - I saw him go and take the parcel off the counter; he put it between his legs and came out with it - I took him. ANGELIOUS BETRAUN . I took the prisoner in charge.(Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. I was turning to come away, and felt myself seized by the arm - this parcel fell on the floor, and the witness took it up. JOHN MICHAEL ROSE . He was stopped just at the doorway. GUILTY . Aged 18. - Transported for Seven Years .
