Arson.—On the night of the 9th inst., about seven o'clock, two rambling women named Eliza Jones and Margaret Basley, set fire to a cow-house, belonging to a farmer named Thomas Carroll, at Fontstown, by applying matches to the thatch; after which they went to the police station at Youngstown, and told what they had done ; the police sallied out, and reached Carroll's about half a mile from their barrack, in time to rescue two cows and two heifers from being burned to death ; had the police been ten minutes later the cattle would have been destroyed, as Carroll had not noticed the fire until the police called. The necessary informations have been sworn, the women were committed for trial at next assizes.— Leinster Express. Evening Freeman, 16 Feb 1850.
